Today marks the first day of an international 16 day campaign against gender based violence which runs from the 25th of November to the 10th of December every year. And this year’s theme is “Orange the world: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape”.
The campaign was spearheaded by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership in 1991. And has been celebrated across the globe ever since. Individuals and organizations use this campaign to call against gender based violence that includes rape, sexual violence, sexual harassment and abuse.
For women and girls in Zimbabwe, their rights are violated on a daily basis due to social norms, lack of empowerment and discrimination.
The main areas that need to be addressed to reduce gender based violence are : 1. Criminalizing child marriage. 2. Social safety nets for underage pregnancy. 3. Increasing safety for public spaces for women and girls. 4. Engaging traditional leaders on some of the cultural norms that affect women and girls.
