22 year old Zimbabwean influencer, Vee Kathivu, has impressively made it into Ivy league school Harvard for her postgraduate studies. She shared the wonderful news on her social media pages. “Wonderful example of people who look like us, from the same nation who are making it there. Inspirational,” said one of her Zimbabwean followers.
Miss Kathivu is a YouTuber with over 160 thousand subscribers. She is popularly known for using her platform to share educational advice to young people. In 2018 she was listed as one of UK’s top ten black students and was featured on The Queen’s Commonwealth trust as a bright young mind. Last month she received a compliment from Prince Harry who said her platform was “a safe space for young people”.
While Kathivu has achieved so much at a young age, she has not always had a rosy life. Her father passed away when she was only 2 and she was forced to move to the UK with her mother at age 7 in search of greener pastures. In the UK, she attended public schools which she described as “disruptive”. And she worked long hours at MacDonald’s to help out her mother.
However, through hard work and perseverance, she made it to Oxford University for her undergraduate studies. It is during her time at Oxford that she started her YouTube channel. Ever since her YouTube career took off, she has given back to the community by advocating for girl child education in low income countries like Zimbabwe. While news of getting accepted to Harvard was exciting she has admitted that “she is very nervous” about starting university in a new place. Her fans have however shown her overwhelming support on her new journey.
