The Director of African Program (Carniege Endowment), Zanaib Usman has urged Nigerian authorities to stop appeasing criminals with payouts, while believed this led to continuous abductions of Nigerians especially northern school children.

Usman who made this appeal on her social platform on Friday, reacted to the armed bandits abduction of hundreds Schoolgirls at Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Friday 26th February, 2021.

She said Nigeria has a serious internal security crisis, while called for an investment heavily in improved (community) policing. “Overhaul the police force recruit, train and empower people to defend their communities. 300k officers cannot protect 200m people”.

Meanwhile, the incident is coming barely a week after the abduction of dozens of schoolboys in Kagara, Niger State. Witnesses said the bandits stormed the Zamfara school, located on the outskirt Kwanar Bagare, around 1:40am after breaking the gate.

Initial reports had put the figure of the missing students at 300, but sources in the school said the number of abducted students is “about 500”, but the number of the abducted Schoolgirls can not be ascertained as at when this report was filed.
