The Bauchi State Assembly has on Wednesday debated on a bill seeking to establish oil and gas academy in the oil rich Alkaleri local government area of the state. The debate which was requested by Governor, Bala Mohammed is to establish Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy in Alkaleri to provide courses of instruction, research and training in oil and gas technology and other related matters.
At the plenary, Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Baballe Abubakar Dambam moved that the bill be read first reading. However, the bill passed second reading after Deputy Majority Leader Hon. A member representing Shira constituency, Bello Muazu Shira noted that, the school should be located elsewhere in other parts of the State and not Alkaleri. “Since Alkaleri is where the oil is found, other parts without oil should get the school,” he said.
While reacting, the Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman opposed Shira’s comments, saying that the school ought to be where oil is found as it is the practice everywhere. After deliberations, Hon. Baballe Abubakar Dambam moved that the bill should be referred to the joint committees on education and science and technology and be given one week to complete its assignmentsl.
However, Hon. Saleh Hodi Jibir observed that since the content of the bill talks about oil and gas, therefore, should be referred to the House committee on mines and power. The Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman overruled all observations on the bill and refer the bill to joined committees of education, science and technology and mines and power and give the committees one month to report back.
