Africa’s king of music, Burna Boy has received raving reviews for his official video of Monsters You Made which premiered on the 27th of August. Warner Music has called it a “must watch” with “powerful visuals” and Link Up TV has called it a “revolution”.
The video, which features Coldplay’s Chris Martin, showcases the effects of colonialism, slavery and racism on the black race. It criticizes Africa’s school system which still heavily relies on European influence. “That Monsters You Made song is an entire history class” a fan commented. Viewers have commended its lyrical content which sends a message of “strength and endurance” to Africans
For centuries, black people have always been despised because of the colour of their skin and deprived of certain privileges. And when they take up arms because of this oppression, they are blamed. Burna Boy’s video brings to light these issues with hope that it empowers black people. The video reached 2 million views on YouTube in less than a week and debuted number 17 on Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart.
Burna Boy’s relentless effort to push boundaries in the music industry has made him receive recognition worldwide. Business Day Nigeria labelled him “an outlier” while Chris Martin admitted through his twitter page that “Burna Boy is King”.
