Self-proclaimed prophet, Sheperd Bushiri and wife Mary have fled the country for Malawi despite their bail conditions. The South African HAWKS confirmed that the two did not report at the police station yesterday as per bail requirements citing that the two had “skipped the country” to avoid trial.

Bushiri has however denied that he and his wife were running away from trial. He confirmed through his social media platform that there had been countless attempts on his life and that of his family hence the decision to flee.

“I would like to inform the general public that my wife, Mary and I are temporarily in our home country, Malawi, because of safety and security issues since 2015, matters that got worse when we just got out on bail. There have been clear and evident attempts to have me, my wife and my family killed and despite our several attempts to report to authorities, there has never been State protection,” read the statement.

The Bushiri’s were first accused of financial fraud in 2015 and were released on bail pending trial. Five years later, the state claims it is still not ready for trial. A month earlier, the two were arrested once more on different allegations and released on bail pending trial. The Bushiri’s however feel the State does not have a strong case against them but is merely stalling.

“We have come to a painful conclusion that what my wife and I have faced in the Republic of South Africa, since 2015, is purely persecution not prosecution,” says Bushiri.Bushiri has stated that he will not be returning to South Africa until the state can assure their safety.
