The Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga headed the Council of Education Ministers (CEM) on the 2nd of July 2020. The minister, her deputy and all the provincial MECs together with representatives from the Education Department considered five reports on the basic education department in the context of covid19.
The reports examined the readiness of each province to welcome more learners on the 6th of July 2020. After a careful deliberation, a decision was taken to only allow fewer grades than envisaged, namely grades R, 6 and 11 to return to school. Motshekga explained that the decision was taken in view of the “rising number of infections in community transmissions and based on the risk-adjusted strategy.” The minister is expected to hold a media briefing tomorrow at 16h00 to elaborate on the dates for the phasing in of other grades.
