Court remands former police officers for murder of Chima Ikwunado

Four dismissed police officers accused of torturing Late Chima Ikwunado to death and the attempted murder of four others have been arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt. Ayogu Fidelis, Eke Chibuzor, Rose Georgewill and Egbunefu Felix are facing a seven count charge, bothering on conspiracy, murder, attempted murder and assault against four other survived victims of the arrest.

The four accused who were officers attached to the Eagle Crack Squad of the Rivers State Police Command pleaded not quilty to the seven count charge. Chief Magistrate, Promise Iruanya denied the bail application presented for the accused and ordered that they be remanded in the Nigeria Correctional Facility on the basis that the court lacks the jurisdiction to hear the case.

He thereafter adjourned till 19th of September for trial. Counsel to the family of Late Chima Ikwunado, Princess Lawrence told the media outside the court room that they are disappointment that only 4 suspects appeared in court. One of the surviving victims, Ifeanyi Onyekwere and the family of late Chima Ikwunado said that they expect the police to ensure justice is served.

The popular “Ikoku five” were wrongfully arrested and tortured for car theft. Chima died from the torture in the custody of the police.
