President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed South Africans on the 13th of May 2020, stating that new changes are yet to come as the country focuses on increasing economic activity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The President states that most provinces will be able to enter the third phase of lockdown which will assist economic recovery, however provinces with high COVID- 19 infections will remain in stage 4 of lockdown. Announcements of the provinces which will move into stage 3 will be made later in the week. 25 000 beds as well as Personal Protective Equipment have been donated to public hospitals and this proves to be the biggest public health mobilization the country has ever witnessed .
The President also shows gratitude towards the United States Government for donating 1000 ventilators. He also urges South Africans to stay vigilant and to follow COVID-19 prevention measures even though the country now prepares to ease into phase 3 of lockdown by the end of May.
The President also states that there has been an alarming raise in the number of gender based violence cases since the beginning of lockdown thus amendments will be made to allow victims to open cases at their local police station without fear of violating lockdown rules.
