According to the police he and other six passengers had boarded a North Rift Shuttle plying Nairobi to Kitale at Afya centre in Nairobi. On reaching Gitaru, he alighted and instructed the driver to take his luggage (bag) to Kitale and upon arriving in Kitale to call him for further directives.

Other passengers became suspicious about the heavy bag and advised the driver to handover at Nderi police patrol base where it was discovered after opening the bag that it contained one sealed box having 750 ammunition rounds of 7.62 millimetres. The police called him and after some few minutes, the owner of the bag came to the patrol base and identified himself as a GSU officer.
