The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has guaranteed that outstanding stipends for the Covid 19 youth brigades deployed at schools are being processed. They assured, on the 15th of July , that they are working around the clock to verify documentation.
The glitches were further worsened by the closure of some schools as payments were captured in groups. The Spokesperson for the Department Steve Mabona, said, “The Covid 19 Youth Brigades play a significant role and are the cornerstone of our program to protect learners and fight the pandemic. Indeed we appreciate and value their contribution in our sector. We sincerely apologize for the delays and assure them that they will be paid their stipends in due course. ”
The GDE has revealed that in future, it will opt for a simpler approach The Youth brigades were roped in June to help screen learners and staff, capture data ad monitor the observance of health protocols.
