Minister Cain Mathema addressed the nation yesterday with a solution that will assist government in increasing passport production. Zimbabwe currently has a backlog of over 300000 passports and it is taking an average of 18 months for a citizen to receive the document after application. This incapacitation has mainly been due to lack of resources which the government is failing to provide at the current passport price. A passport costs ZW$53 which is approximately equivalent to USD2.63 only. However, Min Mathema said that delivery of the 3 new machines which the government has imported will assist the registra in printing 100000 passports by December. Thereby reducing backlog to about 200000. Additionally, Zimbabweans residing in other countries will now be able to apply for new passports at their nearest embassy without having to travel to Zimbabwe.
