Int’l Literacy Day: Rotary Clubs In Ibadan Collaborate With FRSC

The Rotary Club International, Ibadan Chapters, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo State Command jointly celebrated the 2020 International Literacy Day with a road walk on traffic awareness and enlightenment to road users in Ibadan metropolis. The rotary clubs in Ibadan and FRSC also use the World Literacy Day celebration to further sensitize and advise the general public to be keeping safe as COVID-19 is still in action globally, by making sure to keep social distancing, use of the face mask, hand sanitizer and many other protective measures needed.

The District Chair (District 9125), Basic Education and Literacy of Rotary Club International, Ass.Professor (Mrs) Rotarian Adesuyi Jane, while addressing the pressmen present at the event, said “We are here today, to celebrate World Literacy Day, which is a global event celebrating over the world on this day 8th September as declare by the United Nations in1967.” “In Rotary Club, Basic Education and Literacy are one of the core areas of service of the humanitarian organization. And September month has been designated to mark the World Literacy, basic education and literacy in the majors”, She noted.

The Ass. Prof. Adesuyi Jane, who chairs the basic education and literacy unit of the rotary club international in 23 states of the federation, including FCT, further notes that, “The global event that the Ibadan clubs of Rotary International collaborating with FRSC was to sensitize the community about the important of education. And further create more awareness about road safety and other safety measures to all road users.” “Education is the key to national development, and more reason why we should strive to make our society a literate one. And the campaign for balance education without discrimination, especially, girl child education”

The Deputy Chairman, District 9125 Basic Education and Literacy of Rotary Club International, Rotarian.Adeniyi Abiodun Adeoti also added that, “Rotary Club is an international organization and need to celebrate international events like this WORLD LITERACY DAY. He stated that, “Rotary International aims at making the entire society a literate one. And the month of September has been designated for Basic Education and Literacy Education.”

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Oyo Sector Commander, Uche Unefest Ukura, also express the satisfaction of the Oyo State Command to collaborate with the Rotary Clubs in Ibadan for the alignment of their agenda in the marking of the World Literacy Day, and the synergy between the duos is a great one for the betterment of our general society in the area of safety. She urges the general public to observe the necessary protective measure against the spread of COVID-19. The road walk covers the business heart of the state capital, notably, Eleyele, Aleshinloye, Dugbe, Adamasingba, Mokola, Sabo, Onireke and other nearby environs where flyers and other awareness souvenirs were distributed.

It should be added that, literacy is a needed skill for all, and not limiting to the learning in the classroom setting.
