Unconfirmed reports indicate that Starbucks might be finally coming to Zimbabwe, news that coffee lovers will be excited to know. According to a public post by popular entrepreneur, Masimba Marangwanda, coffee shop Coffee Republik will be bringing the franchise.
“Congratulations to Coffee Republik who will be bringing Starbucks coffee to Zimbabwe. Great news for coffee lovers,” he said. Coffee Republik neither denied nor confirmed the information but they did leave a like on the post.
While Starbucks has been a very successful brand in the US and Europe, it has not done very well in Africa. The franchise had to shut down some of its shops in South Africa when sales started dwindling. The current price of a Starbucks coffee cup is 15-25% more expensive than local brands
If the brand does set up shop in Zimbabwe, it will be interesting to see how they tackle the hurdles associated with a low income economy. Coffee Republik has however not confirmed if they will be setting up a franchise shop or not. Another possible option for the coffee shop is that they will be buying Starbucks coffee packs and reselling them locally without rebranding their business.
