Kwaito legend and mother of two, Nomasonto Mshoza Masangwanyi, has passed on. The 37-year-old star succumbed to diabetes complications early Thursday morning at a Johannesburg hospital.

The sad news was broken by The Southern African Music Rights Association who tweeted “It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of kwaito star Nomasonto Maswanganyi, affectionately known as Mshoza.”

Her death has caused a great loss to the South African music industry. Mshoza, whose been likened to Lebo Mathosa and Brenda Fassie, rose to fame in the early 2000s when she released Kortes with Mzambiya.

She was one of the few South African females to break out in Kwaito hence being dubbed “the godmother of kwaito”.

She will be remembered for her talent, her fight against GBV and her controversial lifestyle. Particularly, she received a lot of persecution for bleaching her skin in 2013 but she was resilient and did not care about public opinion.

Mshoza is survived by two kids, a boy and a girl, both below the age of 13.
