Kwesta: How to get your music video on Trace

SA Rapper, Kwesta, took some time out with Old Mutual’s AMPD Masterclass to give some tips and tricks on how to get one’s music on major platforms like Trace.

Born Senzo Vilakazi, Kwesta was a township boy who’s music career blew up in 2012, 5 years after entering the Hip Hop scene. “Resources made a big gap between me and the game,” he said explaining why it took him so long to release hit songs and videos. “Now the struggles are different because technology has made it so much easier to put stuff out. Now the big fight is how to get noticed,” he continued.

According to Kwesta, if you want to get your music noticed you need to invest in meaningful relationships with record labels. Not every artist can afford to shoot music videos and promote it on their personal budget.

“A deal is probably great for you so that whoever is around you will deal with all the work. It sounds great to be an independent artist but you actually have to know how to run a business for you to be that,” he advised.

When Kwesta released his debut album in 2010, he was signed to Buttabing Entertainment. It is through this deal that his music got featured on DStv ad campaigns and American movie, Death Race 3.

It is also through Sony Music that his single Ngud became an international hit airing on Trace and MTV. “The conceptualisation of that music video was done by some amazing people,” Kwetsa said. If it wasn’t for Sony’s strong pocket he may have never afforded hiring the most expensive production team behind said video.

“If you find the people that have the things that you need get yourself closer to them by offering what you have in exchange of what you need,” was his final word of advice.
