Gauteng Premier, David Makhura gave an update on the Covid 19 pandemic and the province’s integrated response to it on Thursday the 2nd of July 2020 via a livestream briefing.Makhura, head of the Coronavirus Provincial Command Council, exclaimed that “the storm has arrived” after giving a breakdown of the numbers.
He explained that the month of June has experienced an intense spike in the number of confirmed cases daily and that the number of patients hospitalised has increased significantly. The projected peak was in September but the Covid 19 pandemic is running way ahead of that projection.
Some of the key interventions outlined by Makhura are the following: Establish drastic measures to flatten the curve. Make representations to the National Command Council on the necessity to re-introduce stringent measures including intermittent localised lockdowns.
Sending out Covid 19 response teams to re-enforce the importance of observing social distancing, health and hygiene protocols such as the wearing of face masks and washing of hands.
