Less than 24 hours since polling stations closed for counting, reports show that main opposition leader, Dr Lazarus Chakwera is leading by over 60%. Chakwera’s alliance with opposition leader Saukos Chilima is paying off as it has boosted his stronghold in North and Central Malawi.
So far Chakwera has received 75000 votes in the North versus long serving President Mutharika’s 12000 votes. In Central Malawi, Chakwera has received 149000 versus Mutharika’s 12000.
Peter Mutharika leads in rural areas in the South which have historically been his stronghold. Results reported so far show that he has received over 145000 votes versus Chakwera’s 49000. Only a third of the results have been released so far and counting is expected to take a couple more days.
