A total of 347 264 people have been arrested in Zimbabwe for violating lockdown rules, an official said on Thursday.
Acting Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere said this problem is prevalent at funerals.
“Despite the upsurge in the number of infections and deaths related to the disease (Covid-19) , it has been noted that there is a section of our society that continues to wantonly disregard lockdown procedures,” he said.
A total of 7 082 people, he said, were arrested throughout the country for violating movement restrictions in the past week.
“As of 20 January 2021, a total of 347 264 arrests were made countrywide, for flouting lockdown regulations, indicating an increase of 19 188, from the 328 076 that was recorded the previous week.”
Whilst proper wearing of masks has proven to be effective against transmission, he said, a considerable number of people have been arrested for flouting this requirement.
As at 27 January 2021, Zimbabwe had 32 304 confirmed cases, including 23 687 recoveries and 1 122 deaths.
