Police denies man died of torture in custody

A motor mechanic identified as Mr. Chima Ikwunado is reported to have died in police custody at the E-Crack in Mile 1 Port Harcourt.

Mr. Ikwunado was said to have been arrested along side four others by the police last year over car theft in Port Harcourt, and was kept under police custody.

Reports says he was tortured to death by men of the E-Crack. Meanwhile; the owner of the alleged stolen car which was been repaired by Mr. Ikwunaso had raised alarm that his mechanic was allegedly murdered in police custody after collecting over one hundred and fifty naira from the victims.

The owner of the car who pleaded anonymity said he went through tough time in the hands of the officers in charge of the matter before recovering his cars, adding that he never reported to police that his car was missing against their report.

The Spokesman man of the Command, Nnamdi Omoni however confirmed the death of the mechanic in police custody, but debunked claims tha he was tortured to death by men of the Nigerian police.

He also confirmed some men were arrested last year by the Commander of Eagle Crack, SP Benson Adetuyi, in connection with robbery and cultism and were detained while investigations were still ongoing.

He said an autopsy report revealed that he died of high sugar level. The Commissioner of Police therefore ordered an investigation into the matter, to unravel the circumstances of his death and bringing about Justice.
