
The Senate President, Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan has said that with the rising cases of rape across the country, what government need to do is to put in place stiffer penalties in Nigeria’s criminal and penal code that will serve as deterrent to perpetrators involved in the act.
The Senate President disclosed this on his official platform on Tuesday, he said Nigerians should stand together to shoulder on this. “We have to save our future, and these girls and women are the future of this nation”.
He added that the Senate took a look at the brutality and rape of the girl child in Nigeria with particular reference to the cases of Miss Tina Ezekwe in Lagos, Miss Uwa Omozuwa at the University of Benin and the 12 year old girl in Jigawa state.
