On the 11th of May 2020 at 12 am, South African Social Security Aggency opened its application platforms for the COVID-19 unemployment relief fund.
It has been approximately 30 minutes and the WhatsAppnumber (082) 046-8553 and SASSA code *134*7737# have not been successfully responding to applicants and constantly requesting for a system timeout. It might be safe to assume that the system has crashed due to a high number of applications. The R350.00 unemployment grant is applicable for anyone over 18 years as long as they attach proof of residency, identity and provide their contact as well as banking details.
SASSA appears to be trending on social media platforms such as twitter with most people dissatisfied due to the timeout responses while few applicants have received a response stating that their application was received and that they should await feedback.
At this stage it would be advisable for SASSA to improve their system to avoid future technical difficulties because the number of applications are yet to rise. If not they need to release a statement explaining how their system accepts applications; is it set on a first come first serve or alphabetical basis? The people need to know why the system seems to be offline,as per usual.
