Socialite Shauwn Mkhize declares war on the taxman

By Tatenda Marwodzi

Socialite and businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize has declared war on South African Revenue Services (SARS). Following a court order granting SARS permission to liquidate her company, Mkhize has vowed to “fight” the decision even if it means she will “sell every a teaspoon” in her house.

According to SARS, Mkhize’s company, Zikhulise Cleaning Maintenance and Transport Service (ZCMT) owes R204 million (US$12.3 million) in taxes. The matter to recover the tax owed began in 2016 when SARS, at the time, alleged that Mkhize’s business owed R144 million (US$8.7 million) which led to the repossession some of her luxury cars.

Mkhize has however disputed the amount and has revealed that she will be appealing the court’s decision.

“In the 4 years in question I have contributed R350 million to SARS,” she told SABC news. Mkhize believes that if a proper audit is conducted, the courts will discover that her company owes less than R50 million (US$3 million) in taxes.

Mkhize amassed her fortunes through ZCMT a construction company that provides low-cost housing for local municipalities. Through government tenders, she accumulated more properties and eventually ventured into the entertainment industry. She currently has a reality tv show with her son called “Kwa Mamkhize”.

As of June 2020, she was estimated to have a net worth of R300 million (US$18 million) and owns a lavish million-dollar property in La Lucia.
