South African Health Minister, wife tests positive for COVID-19

The South African Minister of Health, Dr Zwelini Mkhize and his wife, Dr May Mkhize have tested positive for COVID-19 after feeling abnormally exhausted, loses of appetite and severe cough, showing mild symptoms which resulted to a test for the deadly virus.

In a statement released by the Minister on Sunday, he said he is now in quarantine at home, both his wife and him remain optimistic that they will fully recover from the virus.

According to him, “I wish to inform the public that this afternoon my wife, Dr May Mkhize and I have tested positive for COVID-19. We decided to go test yesterday when I started showing mild symptoms.

“I was feeling abnormally exhausted and as the day progressed, I started losing appetite. My wife had a cough, was dizzy and extremely exhausted. Given her symptoms, the doctors advised that she must be admitted for observation and rehydration”.

While their close contacts in the past week have been a few of the family members and some of the Health Ministry team. “We have informed them and advised them to immediately isolate in their homes and be tested.

“I wish to take this opportunity to urge all South Africans to continue adhering to health protocols. I want to beg that we do not neglect wearing our masks, social distancing and washing and sanitizing our hands”, he said.

He further said he will use his quarantine period to rest and recharge because of the task ahead to improve the health services of the country and the lives of the people as post COVID-19 remains paramount importance.
