Veld fires destroy 684 070.22 hectares of land in Zimbabwe since July

Veld fires have destroyed over 684 070.22 hectares of land in Zimbabwe for the period 31 July to 31 October 2020, hurting livelihoods and the environment, an official said on Tuesday.

“Cabinet was informed that a total of 1 153 fire incidences burning 684 070.22 hectares of land were recorded since the beginning of the fire season compared to 1 508 incidences and 1 158 291 hectares burnt over the same period in 2019,” said Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa.

“A total of three lives were lost to veldt fires in 2020.”

Veld fires are damaging vegetation in all fire-prone regions, leading to the direct and indirect loss of valuable natural resources.
