Some stories were full of happy ending but mine reverse was the case, what to do next hasn’t occured to me, where to go next or how to come out of this mess, still I dont know . One common feature; the princess being in distress with a scenario where her charming prince suddenly appears to either save the day or released her from the grasp of death with “true love first kiss”, they got married in a grand wedding party and they “lived happily ever after”. These are the stories that greatly influenced my early childhood and the guiding factor into my adulthood. I longed for what I saw in these fairy tales, I fantasized for this type of romance in my love life making me turn down the love advances of every guy in my neighbourhood because they all didn’t fit into the picture of what I want my charming prince to be. I wanted him to be at least 6 feet tall, dark and handsome, with an athletic body and always putting on great smiles. All my life I kept waiting for him until my 22nd birthday. Komolafe Adeshewa tells her bizarre story. She was born on the 13th of October, 1995, into a middle-class family. As her name implies “Adeshewa”, meaning beauty in the Yoruba language, one could easily perceive the evidence of beauty in her making, which according to her has been a source of attraction admired by all. She goes on with her story: “After waiting a long time for my prince charming, God finally answered my prayer and on my 21st birthday. Like a mysterious arrangement, I met my prince charming or my tragedy on that day. I had made arrangements to take all my friends out on my birthday and we decided to visit a club to celebrate. We were at the club dancing and drinking amidst the loud music being played by the Dj. I was already getting drunk and I then decided to leave the dance hall and cool-off outside. Just as I was about taking the last step that leads outside from the dancehall, I tripped and I was saved from hitting the floor by the firmest hands I had ever known. I looked up to say thank you to my kind saviour and what I saw was breathtaking and I didn’t know when I uttered the words “my prince charming”. When he heard these words, he smiled that captivating kind of smile and deep down I knew he was the one or so I thought. He offered to assist me go outside still holding my hand and all through I kept smiling to myself. When we got outside, I said my thank you. I introduced myself and I told him I came to celebrate my birthday with my friends who are still inside dancing. He was surprised and told me that day was also his birthday. He introduced himself as Bankole John, we exchanged contacts and after a little chat we said our goodbyes with a promise to always keep in touch. A call led to another and we blended well too one another. It was as if we’ve known each other for a very long time. It took no time for me to be swept off my feet with emotions I couldn’t control. We were friends for six months and one day he popped up the question I’ve been longing for and I didn’t hesitate before saying yes to his love advances. John was everything I hoped for in a man. He is handsome, matured, and from a rich family; he loves me a lot. We did so many things together, a day without a call from him looks like hell to me. It took no time for me to start getting jealous when he speaks with other ladies. My friends told me he might be cheating on me seeing he is handsome and ladies love being around him. In other to secure my man, I told him we need to have a blood covenant. After so much argument from him, he agreed to the request because he loves me a lot and doesn’t want to lose me too.
After the blood covenant was done, I felt relieved knowing full well I have secured my man. A year later being in relationship with John, one thing led to another, I got pregnant for him and we started planning for our wedding before the baby arrives. I had met his parents, after which we made arrangements for him to meet my parents. My parents loved John when they met and we made further arrangements for a light family introduction, where his parents can meet mine. On the day of the introduction, after making different arrangements to make the day a success, then tragedy struck, as John’s mum and my mum met. Everything I had hoped for and built came crumbling down. It turns out that my mum and John’s mum knew each other years back. Bankole’s mum got married to a rich man and was barren, while my mum got pregnant for my dad when he had nothing. On the 13th of October, 1995 my mum gave birth to twins; a boy and a girl. My mum and dad decided to sell one of the twins because of my dad’s poverty and inability to pay the hospital bills. They sold the boy (my unknown twin brother) to Mrs. Bankole for a sum my mother can no longer remember accurately. Unfortunately, the boy now turns out to be the man who I had fallen in love with; had blood covenant and sexual relationship with, and got pregnant for. What next?
