The Rivers state government has demolished some structures at the Rumuokoro axis of the state to pave way for the 3rd flyover bridge in the state.
The exercise was supervised by the state Commissioner for Works, Austin Chioma. Chioma said the Rumuokoro demolition is coming now as the place was not earlier ready for demolition exercise.
He said contrary to the claims of some shop owners, a notice had been sent prior to the time of the demolition and also extended. Meanwhile, some of the landlords complained that they were under payed for the destruction of their buildings.
They said they believe they are being compensated lesser than the estimated loss of their properties. Some also alleged that their buildings which were not marked for demolition were demolished for not lobbying. On their part, tenants affected by the demolition exercise also called on the government to always consider them in exercises like this as they are left stranded without compensation, adding that they pay all the necessary taxes to the government.
