Zimbabwe: Energy Minister Chasi Fired

By Almot Maqolo

Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday fired his Energy and Power Development Minister Fortune Chasi and has been replaced by Soda Zhemu, the Member of Parliament for Muzarabani North.

In a statement, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr MJM Sibanda Misheck Sibanda confirmed the dismissal saying: “In terms of Section 104 (1) of the Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 20) Act of 2013, His Excellency the President Cde Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has appointed Hon. Soda Zhemu, Member of Parliament for Muzarabani North as Minister of Energy and Power Development in place of the current Minister, Hon. Advocate Chasi”.

“The latter has been relieved of his ministerial post in terms of Section 108 (1a) as his conduct of Government business had become incompatible with the President’s expectations.” Sibanda added that: “The appointment of Hon. Soda Zhemu, the removal of Hon. Fortune Chasi, are with immediate effect.”

“Zimbabwean government never deserved @fortunechasi. He was too good for that cabinet. The only minister there that was for serving the people and not himself. He may have had his faults, like all humans, but he was the best minister in that cabinet,” said one twitter user.

Another twitter user said: “F. Chasi was the only person in Zanu pf who delivered results & had tangible outputs, tarred roads & continued provision of electricity. This is a sign that there’s something brewing underneath the Zim seat of power. The intrigue is now playing out in the open.”

“We applaud the President H.E ED Mnangagwa for this good work and his Zero tolerance to Corruption, Zesa will be free. Gata must come back to implement the National Agenda without corrupt interference,” added another twitter user.

Last month, President Mnangagwa fired his Health and Child Care Minister Obadiah Moyo, for conduct inappropriate for a government minister. Moyo appeared in court facing three counts of criminal abuse of office relating to the procurement of medicines and consumables. However, he was then released on ZWL$50 000 bail.
