Zimbabwe: Over 10 000 motorists arrested for flouting lockdown rules

At least 10 000 motorists have been arrested in Zimbabwe for violating lockdown rules, police say.Motorists and bus passengers have to produce exemption letters issued to staff in essential services or give explanations that satisfies the police at roadblocks.

However, those unable to produce letters or give satisfactory explanations are turned back and told to go home.“10398 motorists have been arrested to date since commencement of the operation against motor vehicle owners who operate public transport without exemption,” Zimbabwe Republic Police said in a tweet.Those caught flouting the lockdown rules are fined between ZWL$200 to ZWL$500.The southern African nation has recorded 7116 cases, 5373 recoveries and 208 deaths since the onset of the Covid-19 outbreak on 20 March 2020.
