Guinea-Bissau: Go back to barracks, UN Chief tells soldiers

United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has reacted to the coup attempt in Guinea-Bissau, appealing for soldiers to go back to the barracks for the constitutional order to be fully in place.

Guterres responding to question from journalists on Tuesday, said it has not yet confirmed what’s really happening in Guinea-Bissau but it’s clear that coups are totally unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Guinea Bissau was on the verge of yet another Military takeover on Tuesday 1st of February, 2022, with some gunfire exchange in the capital, around the Presidential Palace.

Several persons died in the gunfire exchange, and more others injured, while Guinea Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embalo assures the situation is currently under control.

Speaking on the Ethiopia conflict, the UN Secretary General said Ethiopian people continue to suffer greatly, strongly appealed for all parties in Ethiopia for an immediate cessation of hostilities.  

He said as the world prepare for Winter Olympic, all parties, everywhere, must stop hostilities throughout the course of the games. “Allow effective humanitarian access and relief to all affected populations.  

Guterres reiterated his appeal to all parties to follow the finest tradition of the Olympic spirit to save lives, overcome differences and find the path to real peace.
