Bank of Uganda announces death of Governor, Tumusiime-Mutebile

Bank of Uganda has announced the sudden death of its Governor, Professor Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile who died at the Nairobi Hospital on Sunday 23th January, 2022 after a brief illness.

In a statement released on the Bank’s Official Social platform on Sunday, while further announcement will be made as regard his funeral in due course.

According to statement, “It is with profound sadness that the Bank of Uganda announces the death of it’s gallant Governor, Emmanuel Tumusiime- Mutebile”.

Which also added that Prof. Tumusiime-Mutebile passed away at the Nairobi Hospital on Sunday 23th January, 2022 at around 0500hrs.

“Further announcement will be made in due course. The Bank of Uganda family, together with his natural family and friends join the nation in mourning his loss”.

Ex-Special Envoy to the Ugandan President, Ruhakana Rugunda reacting to the death of the Governor on his social platform said “The passing on of my friend Tumusiime-Mutebile is a huge loss to Kigezi, Uganda and Africa.

“We are grateful for the great contribution Tumusiime-Mutebile made guiding the economy, private sector development, academia, student and youth leadership in his earlier years”, he said.

Tumusiime-Mutebile was Africa’s longest-serving central bank governor, having led the BoU for more than 20 years as President Yoweri Museveni reappointed him to another five-year term, effective Jan. 13, 2021.

Before becoming governor in 2001, he was the permanent secretary and secretary to the treasury in the finance ministry. Tumusiime-Mutebile aged 72, was educated at Makerere University, Durham University and Oxford University.
