Museveni mourns passing of Bank of Uganda Governor, Mutebile

Ugandan President, Yoweri K. Museveni has expressed sadness over the passing of the Governor of Central Bank of Uganda, Professor Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile on Sunday 23th of January, 2022.

Museveni took to his social media platform on Monday to show how sadden he is by the unfortunate incident, said the Governor was an exceptional economist.

According to him, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of the Bank of Uganda Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile.

Mutebile was an exceptional economist; a humble servant whose acumen and perspectives on economic matters were singular”, he said.

The President noted that Mutebile will be remembered for steering the economy of the country through a strong tide. “My heartfelt condolences to the family, and all his relations”.

The Bank who announced the death of the Governor on Sunday, stated “It is with profound sadness that the Bank of Uganda announces the death of it’s gallant Governor, Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime- Mutebile”.

Which further added that Prof. Tumusiime-Mutebile passed away at the Nairobi Hospital on Sunday 23th January, 2022 at around 0500hrs

“Further announcement will be made in due course. The Bank of Uganda family, together with his natural family and friends join the nation in mourning his loss”.

Mutebile was Africa’s longest-serving Central Bank Governor, having led the BoU for more than 20 years as President Museveni reappointed him to another five-year term, effective Jan. 13, 2021.

Before becoming Governor in 2001, he was the permanent secretary and secretary to the treasury in the finance ministry. Mutebile aged 72, was educated at Makerere University, Durham University and Oxford University.
